In 1920s London newly independent Nell Bartlett is drawn into an aeons old cold war over a mysterious artefact with the power to unleash a devastating curse.

When she meets a mysterious stranger she sees only an opportunity to flirt and dance for an evening. But when he turns up later injured and running from... something... she feels compelled to help him. And when she finds the strange, ancient figurine he's stolen she feels sure she should do something about it.

Before long she finds herself in the middle of a conflict older than civilisation itself – a conflict she's pretty sure she could sort out for good, if only anyone would listen to her.
